Author: Audrey Greathouse

Release Date: 5/9/2016
Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That’s what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.
However, Gwen doesn’t know this. She’s just a sixteen-year-old girl with a place on the debate team and a powerful crush on Jay, the soon-to-be homecoming king. She doesn’t know her little sister could actually run away with Peter Pan, or that she might have to chase after her to bring her home safe. Gwen will find out though—and when she does, she’ll discover she’s in the middle of a looming war between Neverland and reality.
She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

AND NOW FOR ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PARTS OF THE BOOK!!!
Cynara and Lasiandra also began to eat the bright orange fruits as Peter asked again, “Can you tell me what the sky has been doing, what the planets have been telling you?”
Although disappointed she would get nothing more out of him than fruit, Cynara was now willing to discuss the heavens with Peter. “The planets have been all unaligned for quite some time. There is disunity in the sky, and disharmony in the world. Pluto and Neptune will remain in the far corner of this wayward house for many years, but that is the way of this time. The war’s end is not in sight, and nothing you do now will end it.
“It is a turbulent moment, with Jupiter so far from its sister planets, and alone in its own distant house. Mercury is roaming quickly through the houses, but in little more than a week’s time, it will be alongside the other dark planets, just as Venus eclipses Mars.
“There is envy in the sky, Peter, and when the heavens are jealous, no good can come of it. The stars have stopped shooting. They are holding their breath and waiting to see what magic will govern them in the centuries to come. The sky will not help you, but it will not impede you. These bodies cannot assist in a matter such as your war, but they are firmly sided with you. When your stars and his align, you will have your chance to meet the minstrel. He still moves with the music of the spheres, for now. That music continues to play, but its sound is softening, Peter.
“You must understand that the magic is being drained from the mechanics of it. The constellations have left the stars and the man has left the moon. Your adversaries are emptying out the sky, Peter. They discover more and more every day, but they assign numbers and letters where once they gave names and legends. They are stripping the sky of its majesty. That is why the stars will not aid you in your battle—they are unable. They are too governed by physics and cannot bend to manifest their prophecies. They have whispered our destinies to us, but now it is in our hands to enact them.”
The mermaid bobbed in the water with playful mystery. Peter pensively considered her words. “Thank you, Cynara, this is… an interesting turn of events.”
“The one you seek is on his way,” she assured him. “His travels will be safe, and he will be invincible until he lifts his instrument again. The stars still love him, even if man has forgotten. If you want to find him, seek out the aviator, Peter. He is closer to the stars than you realize. The aviator has seen the whole world over from his place in the sky, and he will know how to find the piper.”
“Will it really be that easy, Cynara?”
“Oh, by no means. Even if you find that minstrel, you’ll still have to convince him to play his
star-music once again… thank you for the papaya, Peter.”
Cynara swam off, slyly smiling. She stayed on her back, but sank into the waters, her fruit still in her hands.
Lasiandra retreated, but she kept her eyes peeking out of the water. She still watched Gwen, hardly glancing at Peter at all during this encounter. Gwen held Lasiandra’s eyes, but Peter seemed to have lost sight of her as she drifted back behind a low rock.
“Perhaps next time, you will come swim with us.” Eglantine giggled. “Then you can speak to the planets yourself.”
“Little boys cannot speak to stars; that’s for those whose dreams are born beneath the saltwater sky.”
“Silly, Peter,” Eglantine replied as she, too, swam off. “Anyone can speak to the sky.” She left the rind of her papaya floating, having already devoured all of its flesh. “The only hard part is getting it to talk back.”

Author Tara St. Pierre was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions I had about her experiences in writing and about her book Just a Few Inches, which sounds so interesting. For those of you that don’t know what it’s about, here’s the excerpt from Goodreads;
“All Carrie Roberts wants is to be a little bit smaller.
To fit into the perfect dress for the Valentine’s Day Dance. To look beautiful for her boyfriend, the school’s star basketball player. To keep his jealous ex-girlfriend, a rival cheerleader, away from him. And to be noticed by her classmates.
Exercising and dieting don’t work, but an advertisement for weight loss pills promises a quicker solution to her problem. As time runs out, she takes more than the recommended dose until she’s just a few inches slimmer. Heads turn when she arrives at the dance, and the wonderful night with her boyfriend is beyond what she dreamed it would be.
Days later, Carrie discovers that her body is changing in ways that should be impossible. While her doctor searches for a cure, she desperately turns to her friends and family for support. Everyone is noticing her now whether she likes it or not, and even the media is intrigued by her incredible story. Getting everything she once wanted has created new problems—problems that are growing more terrifying every day.
Because Carrie Roberts is shrinking.”
What was your inspiration for Just a Few Inches?
I was in the checkout line at a supermarket or drugstore, staring at the magazines—many of them targeted at women. One cover offered a diet program to lose inches from your waist and shrink your dress size. The usage of the word shrink in that context intrigued me. There had been other movies or TV shows where people shrunk, but none that I knew of due to a diet. I thought this was an interesting premise for a story.
I chose a high school setting because teens are always trying to fit in, so Carrie’s insecurities would be believable. Also, by having her shrink in height, I hoped readers would be more intrigued because it was something new, and I could make it about body image in general instead of just weight issues.
With Carrie shrinking in height, it allowed me to posit some interesting questions in a unique way. For example, there are claims that the unreal measurements of fashion dolls may be one reason why young girls have body image issues. I don’t know if that’s true, but when Carrie is that size, she’d have a different perspective and I could posit the question. In the end, if readers of my book learn something from it, then I’ve done my job.
Did you have to do any research?
I could probably write a book about all the preparations and research that went into the story! I have a little more than a basic knowledge of biology and chemistry, so that helped in making the explanation Carrie’s doctor gives about why she’s shrinking at least sound believable. I did some research into how diet pills work on a biochemical level. There were actually more scenes between Carrie and her doctor and many more between Carrie’s family and the pharmaceutical company. They didn’t test well with my advanced readers, so they were removed. All for the better because it shrunk the length of the book and kept the focus on Carrie and her friends and family, which all the readers loved.
But most of the preparations for this story came in taking tons of measurements of anything and everything I could find! Such as: the height of the average doorknob, of a high school locker shelf, of high school desks, of a bed, of a smartphone—everything Carrie interacts with in the story was carefully measured to determine when they would transition from inconvenient to use, to difficult to use, and then to impossible to use. The same measurements were made about a variety of clothing: adult to young teen to pre-teen to toddler, infant, and a variety of dolls.
I found typical growth charts for females so I had an idea what the average height for a girl at every age up to 18 years old so I’d have a frame of reference for her height in comparison to other characters, particularly her sisters. Also, since Carrie shrinks proportionally, I learned that she wouldn’t look like a toddler when she was toddler-sized. Teens and toddlers are built very differently, so toddler and infant clothes would be baggy on her even if they were the right length for her. Thus, I had to keep track of how her shrinking progressed (lots of math) to find a time when she could go to the prom in a somewhat nice dress.
Was there anything particularly hard to write?
The chapters are titled after Carrie’s height, and one of them (2’ 4”) was definitely a challenge. It’s a chapter that surprised me as much as my first round of readers. I don’t want to give away too much, but it’s the first time that Carrie finds herself in a dangerous situation because of her size. She had experienced awkward, bizarre, and embarrassing, but nothing like this. Also, it’s an important turning point in the relationship between two characters. All the elements of the chapter needed to work together just right to have the right impact.
Wish I could be less cryptic, but you can find out what happens if you read the story!
What are your ideal writing conditions (in bed, outside, etc)?
I usually write on my laptop at the kitchen table. I try to keep the TV off but play some music, preferably 80s pop. I’d have a few cookies and sip some raspberry iced tea. It would be even more ideal if I could stop letting the internet distract me while I—oh look, a cat video! CLICK. 😉
Is there a character you have a special connection with?
I spent a lot of time inside Carrie’s head since she’s the first-person narrator, and it took a long time to stop thinking in her voice. Also, to get a better feel of what the world looked like to her as she shrank smaller, I would often kneel or even lie down on the floor to learn her perspective of things. That was definitely a unique bonding experience.
But, I also share a connection with Evan. It was great to write someone so sweet and secure in who he was, even if he was shy at times. Also, I could incorporate some of my inner dorkiness into him. There are some scenes where he performs calculations about Carrie’s height or her trajectory in a cheering routine. I had to do the calculations myself in researching and developing the story, so why let them go to waste or keep them behind the scenes? His character gave me the opportunity to insert some of them into the storyline!
Do you have any plans for upcoming books?
What author doesn’t have plans for the next book? My head and laptop are full of incomplete (and sometimes incoherent) plot bunnies.
But I have written what may become the first chapter of a future project. Right now, it’s a scene with two boys eating pizza while one wants to discuss fractions and infinity. The conversation came to me one morning, so rather than lose it, I typed it out. I like the narrator’s voice, and I’ve started sketching out what his lecture is a defense mechanism for. Whether this will develop into a later YA novel, I don’t know. It took a long time for me to complete Inches, so we’ll just have to wait and see!
Any advice for aspiring writers?
If you want to write, it takes practice. You need to write a little bit every day—even if it’s just a journal entry—and you need to read. Know that not everything you write is going to be perfect or sometimes even good, but it’s all useful. Know that not everyone’s going to like everything about your writing and that’s okay. It’s art; it’s subjective. Write the story you’d want to read, and if others want to read it too, that’s a very special gift. If people you don’t know like it, it’s a wonderful and surreal experience, and never take it for granted.
In anticipation for the third and last book of the best selling series, The 5th Wave, I’ve put together a few questions that I hope will be answered along with some of my personal views. I have a few goodies that I’ll be putting in here as well, including an excerpt of The Last Star!
Let’s start with the biggest question that I just know everyone is dying to know.
Will Cassie end up with Evan or Ben (Zombie)?
Okay, so obviously The 5th Wave isn’t all about Cassie’s love life, but if you’re like me, this is a must know. Now, I’ve been conflicted with this since the start, so I can’t even imagine how Cassie must been feeling. Let’s talk about Ben. Football star turned badass warrior in order to survive. He’s attractive, he’s mad, he’s survived the disease that killed off a huge chunk of the population, and he’s got the selflessness to sacrifice
himself for the greater good. How can anyone resist that? Then, there’s Evan, the sexy alien (or maybe not alien?) that saved Cassie’s life. He’s turned against his own people to help save humanity. Two selfless boys, both saved Cassie at some time or another. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Personally, I’ve gone back and forth. At the beginning of The 5th Wave, before we met Evan, I was all for a Cassie and Ben (Zombie) meet up that results in an apocalypse love (I’m a sucker for hopeless love stories). But Mr. Rick Yancey in all his wisdom and power decides to throw Evan at us and completely throw me off guard. Now, I think I’m all for Team Evan, because while I love Ben, he and Cassie just clash in a way that doesn’t rub the right way. However, if Evan acts toward Cassie like he did in The Infinite Sea and keeps secrets, I just don’t think it would work out. I wouldn’t put it past Rick Yancey to completely mix it up on us and have Cassie pick herself instead.
The symbolism of Sam.
Less of a question, but something I wanted to touch on. Sam start out as this child that can’t do anything for himself and he relies on his father and Cassie to get him through everything. After going through the training and the academy, while he still relies on Ben (Zombie) a little, he shows a kind of independence that can only be brought out by the harsh reality of the apocalypse. By The Infinite Sea, Sam openly pushes away his Bear and Cassie, choosing to be more to himself. He tries to show that he can fend for himself and that he’s grown up. I think that Sam is a great example of how war and hard times can turn even the most innocent of children into thick-skinned warriors, fighting for their lives just like everyone else. By thinking of or being with Bear sometimes, it shows that his inner innocence is still struggling with the hard exterior he’s had to build up to survive.
Would you be “updated”?
I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want to be updated? From my side of things, if you can be “updated” and turned into something other than 100% normal and human and mundane, would you not take it? That sounds like a blast! As long as it’s safe and not completely horrible and painful, I think that being upgraded could be worth it! What do you think? Seriously, I want to know, put your opinion in the comments section!
Whose side is Ringer on?
It’s no secret that Ringer feels an allegiance to Ringer (sometimes humanity if it suits her best) and in the past she’s been pretty close with Zombie and the gang, but now that she’s all upgraded and she has knowledge on all of this stuff, it makes me wonder if she’s still on the same side. Maybe she can see the Other’s side of things or maybe she’ll lay low. Who knows?! Hopefully we will soon!
Here’s a few additional questions that nag at me;
How will Ben and Ringer’s relationship end up? Razor and Ringer?
Are the Others really aliens?
Do we learn more about the Mothership?
Who will live? Who will die?
So many questions and so little time, but fear not, we need not wait long, because The Last Star releases on 5/24 that is so close but so far away. I truly wish I could touch on everything, but if I really tried I would never stop writing this and then the book would already be out! What are you hoping for in The Last Star?
Don’t forget to pre-order The Last Star, so that you can be one of the first people with your hands on it. Add it on Goodreads, review the first two books, spread the word, and The Last Star will be here in no time!

Title: With Malice
Author: Eileen Cook
Format: Paperback (ARC)
Pages: 320
Rating 5/5

**I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
When Jill Charron wakes up in the hospital with no recollection of the past six weeks, her life is in ruins. The accident that put her in the hospital also killed her best friend, Simone. The worst part? Jill was the one driving and everyone seems to think that the accident wasn’t really an accident. Soon, Jill finds herself facing reporters and the harsh people on the internet that all seem to have one thing in common. Everyone thinks that Jill killed Simone. If only Jill knew what really happened. Was Simone’s death really an accident?
First thought after finishing With Malice? “Oh. My. Gosh.”
Pulling you in from page one, With Malice shows not only the struggles of Jill and how she has to deal with foreign police, her own injuries, and a blog that’s basically dedicated to trying to prove her guilty, but also the side of crime that I think many books leave out. About half of the book is dedicated to the reports given by the police, friends of Jill and Simone, random locals that witnesses the accident, and people they met along the way while in Italy. Giving these point of views really helps bring out how words and events can be twisted around. From people wanting the spotlight to honest misreading of the scenario, With Malice has it all.
Let’s talk characters.
Victim or not, I didn’t like Simone from the start. She seemed like the kind of person to trip someone in the hallway just so she could have a laugh or the kind of person to get someone else in trouble for something she did, because it would suit her better to play innocent all the time. Her character just sat wrong with me from cover to cover and I stick to that.
I felt bad for Jill, but I almost felt bad for feeling bad. Dealing with memory loss has to be awful, but when put in a situation where everyone’s asking “What happened?!” it certainly has to be worse. Especially since everyone thinks she was the one to blame for the accident, most people probably thought she was pulling the memory loss card just so she doesn’t have to tell her side. I think that’s awful. But with the lingering “Was is really an accident?” question floating around, I didn’t want to feel bad for her just in case she was to blame.
Nico. I didn’t trust him. No good looking foreign smart guy has good motives. Not to mention he’s obviously a flirt. And the very thought of committing murder-suicide for the likes of him (or any guy in general) should be unthinkable, but in this day and age, there’s just no way to know for sure.
I picked up With Malice with the promise of a fast paced, electrifying story that I wouldn’t be able to put down and I’m glad to say that I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Cook knows exactly what the reader wants, mixing in mystery, violence, friendship, and romance in a way that’s just right for the story. With Malice keeps you guessing from the very start, causing you to try and make connections with outlandish theories and assumptions that keep you hooked from start to finish and leave you wanting more.
Title: Alienated
Author: Melissa Landers
Series: Alienated
Book: 1
Format: Hardback
Pages: 344
Rating: 5/5
Cara Sweeney is given the opportunity of a lifetime. Being the host of the first L’eihr exchange student. As much as it’s an honour, it’s also a curse. People of HALO (a group of humans against the L’eihr) are building their ranks. Tensions are rising quickly and on the verge of riot when Aelyx lands. Cara’s friends begin to turn on her one by one and soon there’s no one to trust.
Aelyx is less than pleased about being on Earth. The colours are too bright, the people are too touchy and harsh, and the food tastes like an explosion. But life on Earth isn’t all bad once you look past the group of protesters. Cara gives him his space and actually attempts to make his time on Earth mean something, but secrets are brewing and they can only stay hidden for so long.
Sci-fi is certainly one of my favourite genres, tied with fantasy. And boy does Melissa Landers know how to write sci-fi! From page one I was sucked into Cara and Aleyx’s lives. A world where everyone knows about and alien race that lives on an almost polar opposite Earth? Sign me up.
Seeing Aelyx’s transformation made me so happy. He showed so much growth and development over the course of the book. I felt so bad for him in the beginning. He lands on Earth and instantly feels homesick, because of the bright, earthy colours, then people keep touching him, which just throws him off even more. THEN to keep the bad times rolling, he can’t even eat the Earth food, because it’s so overpowering. BUT WAIT, HALO is trying to get him shipped away back to L’eihr and makes him feel as unwelcome as possible by protesting and shooting him nasty looks everywhere he goes. It gets to the point where Cara and her family can’t go anywhere, because no one will serve them.
I think Alienated really shows just how harsh people can be and how we refuse to trust people and adapt to change. People need to be more open minded and willing to hear the other side of the story before completely jumping the gun and rioting without cause.
Overall, I loved this book and I can’t wait to read more about Aelyx and Cara in Invaded.

Title: Dragonfly in Amber
Author: Diana Gabaldon
Series: Outlander
Book: 2
Format: Hardback
Pages: 745
Rating: 5/5

Goodreads excerpt:
For nearly twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones… about a love that transcends the boundaries of time… and about Jamie Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.
Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart… in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising… and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.
I truly don’t know where to begin with this. Usually I start off my reviews with summarizing the book in my own words and then giving my views, but the volume of this book seems near impossible to sum up on my own. Despite the fact that there are over 700 pages to this story, I found that I read this fairly quickly. Going into this, I expected to be reading this at least two weeks, but within the second day of actually reading it, I was well over halfway through. Looking back, the story wasn’t even all that interesting. Most of the story was Claire and Jamie going about their normal business with added flare ups of action here and there. Yet, even though I usually detest excess description (which this book is certainly not lacking), I found myself interested in the nitty gritty details that made up this great historical novel. Yes, believe it or not, the history is what ends up drawing you in. The raw material that Gabaldon brings is unlike any other historical fiction novel I’ve ever read. Not only does it give the harsh reality of hygiene and health as a whole, but also the politics and the economic setbacks that I hadn’t expected.
Let’s take a moment to look at time travel.
There is no definite way to write time travel. Until someone has gone back in time and actually been able to write out their experiences, which may never happen, then we will be able to understand it. Even then, going back in time may potentially change everything, causing you to never go back in time to begin with. Thus the paradox starts and everyone reading this gets a headache, because this could literally go in a loop forever. My thoughts on time travel. In my mind, time (construct of human intelligence or not) forms to changes. Meaning, what we live in now is how it always has and always will be, because even if people go back in time, that means that they must have done it already. There is no one time and it’s all happening at the same time, so in reality, no one can change time, because time is as time does. With that being said, I love how time travel is incorporated. I admire any author that even dares to touch time travel simply because it’s so complicated and uncertain. Claire keeps thinking time and time again that her movements will effect how her life was back in the 1940s, but time is funny and she had already made all those moves before she was even born. It’s so completely fascinating that I really don’t know if I can get my views on this across without completely confusing people. Now, with my little rant out of the way, I agree 100% with Gabaldon’s view of time travel. Love it.
As for everything else, I just love Claire and Jamie’s relationship, but dangit they make me so mad sometimes. They’re so hot and cold that it drives me insane, but they’re so intense that you can’t help but love every second of it. I really feel for Claire in this book, she deserves her happy life with Jamie and reality keeps throwing obstacles in the way. Overall, this was a incredible second installment to the Outlander series and I’m so excited to see where it goes in books to come.
Long live Solaris.
One bloodthirsty ruler has been overthrown by another, casting the shadow of death over the Solaris Empire. Vhalla Yarl stands upon the stage of fate, prepared to do battle one final time. Fragile alliances will be tested and new bonds will be formed as the world is reshaped. She fights as the champion of peace, but when the night is darkest will she be able to pay the price of a new dawn?
And, without further ado, I give you the most beautiful book of this beautiful series
I literally cannot stop looking at it.
We are so close to being able to buy the entire series and I’m just so excited to see how it all ends (even though I’ve only read the first book, shhh).
