Book Series Recommendation #1 – The Inheritance Cycle

Series – The Inheritance Cycle (aka The Eragon Series)
Author – Christopher Paolini
Number of books – 4
Overall rating – 5/5

The Inheritance Cycle is probably one of my favourite series that I’ve read. It reminds me a little bit of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein, because of the Elvish language in the books, but other than that, the series is incredibly unique and magical, not to mention you fall in love with the people (and dragons). In this series, you follow the main character, Eragon, who comes across a blue stone he finds in the woods while hunting and you get to see his adventure through his eyes. An adventure full of secrets, betrayal, and a whole knew world that he never knew existed in the small village he grew up in.
I also had the amazing chance to meet the author and I now possess a signed box set of all four books, so this series holds a small part of my heart.

The Secrets We Keep (ARC) Review

To be released – April 28, 2015

The following review was originally posted on my Goodreads account, which can be found on the sidebar.

“When I first picked up this book, I thought the premise of it was very unique and something I’d never really heard about before, but since it wasn’t in my normal reading genres, I was a little skeptical that I would get bored with it. Gosh was I wrong. This book wasn’t even all that fast paced, but it was just so…intense and it kept me guessing. I mean, clearly she was going to come clean sooner or later about who she really was, but the reactions of the people around her are what kept me so interested.”

Overall, this was a great book that I would recommend to people who don’t particularly like fantasy, but like a little suspense and mystery.

None of the Above (ARC) Review

To be released – April 7, 2015

None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio was first brought to my attention via the #yacupid giveaway on Instagram. Now, having won said giveaway, I got this in the mail and I was extremely happy to read it. The review I posted on Goodreads is as follows:
“This book is one of those books that literally everyone needs to read. The main character, Kristin, has the most amazing story. Not only does she lose everything she once held most dear to her in the beginning, but by the end she pulls her life back together and it’s almost better than how it was is the beginning. I would read anything by I.W. Gregorio. Beautiful book!”
And I would stick by that any day. I gave this book 5 stars out of 5 and would recommend this to everyone.

Nightbird (ARC) Review

Image result for nightbird by alice hoffman
To be released – March 15, 2015
Nightbird by Alice Hoffman is about a twelve year old girl named Twig, who lives with her mother in the small town of Sidwell, Massachusetts on the only apple orchard to have Pink apples. Twig’s mother is a beautiful, but sad woman who spends most of her days cooking Pink apple pies and other treats with their family’s secret recipe. Twig, is a tall, awkward girl who earned her nickname because she is so good at climbing. Unfortunately, Twig is very shy and doesn’t really have any friends, but not entirely by choice. Twig’s family has a secret. 200 years ago a witch by the name of Agnes Early put a curse on Twig’s family causing every male born to be born with wings, but that’s not the end of the secret. Twig has a brother who is about four years older than her named James. For obvious reasons, James is kept from the town, locked up in a room where he spends his time exercising (usually by balancing on things like a tightrope) and studying, in which he is very adept.
Twig’s life in Sidwell is fairly quiet and simple, until one day when people start talking about a bird-human monster that sneaks around town and steals from houses, which puts the life of Twig’s brother, James, in danger. Just when Twig thinks she will always be alone, a family moves in next door. Twig first meets Julia and Agate when she falls from a tree she was climbing and sitting in, the two girls (12 and 16) called for their father who just happened to be a doctor and soon Twig finds herself at the hospital with a fractured arm. From then on, Twig finds herself hanging around the sisters more and more, much to the disappointment from her mother. She then tries to distance herself from the sisters claiming that if she gets too close to them, they will invite her over and then wonder why she does not invite them over, which she cannot do for fear of James being discovered. During all of this, bright blue graffiti is being found all over town with the phrase DON’T TAKE OUR HOME AWAY.
The rest of the story involves the adventures of Twig and Julia as they try and piece together who is leaving the mysterious messages and how they can lift the family curse.
For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. It was different and cute, but it was without a doubt not a book I would read more than once. Throughout the book, I found just tiny idiosyncrasies that for some reason bothered me, such as the “inside joke” between Julia and Twig with the word perfect. I thought it was cute to begin with, but after so many times it began to wear on me. Next, there were parts where I found the book was dragging on a little, even though it’s a short 200 page book. Overall, I would recommend this book to people that are willing to not have a lot of action and aren’t turned off by slow reading at times.

5 books, 5 days!

Nightbird

So, this week I decided to take a challenge called “5 books, 5 days” where you read one book for every day. On Monday I read Bloodlines by Richelle Mead, because it’s been on my list for a while now and I decided this was a great time to read it. On Tuesday I decided to read Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, which (as my review states) was one of the best decisions I could have made. Also, it is the book a group I’m in on Goodreads is reading this month, so I hit two birds with one stone. Today I read Delirium Stories: Hana, Annabel, and Raven by Lauren Oliver, which I wasn’t exactly thrilled about, but it was short, so it’s hard to make someone fall in love with a book in just a few short pages. Since the book for today was so short, I went ahead and started reading Legend by Marie Lu. Funny story about the Legend Trilogy, I went ahead and bought the box set, since I’d heard so many good things about it and so far I’m not as into it as I would have hoped. I do hope it gets better near the middle and the end. On Friday I’ll be reading Nightbird by Alice Hoffman, which comes out on the 15th of March. I received Nightbird as an ARC (Advanced Reading Copy) in the middle of the week last week, so I added it to my challenge, because I wanted to read it before it came out, so I could review it. I’m really glad I decided to do this challenge not only because it’s knocking off a few books that I’ve been wanting to read, but it’s also shortened my TBR pile a little! Not to mention how great some of these books were!

Red Queen Review

Hello all! I recently read Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and it was amazing! Unlike most books, I went into this book thinking I probably shouldn’t take my usual route of skipping boring parts and going straight to dialogue, but I guess I didn’t really need to motivate myself, because there really wasn’t ever a dull moment. I finished Red Queen in a day, not only because I was in a 5 books, 5 days read along, but also because it was extremely interesting and I quite literally could not put it down. I find that most people end up talking about the betrayal in this book and I knew, I just knew when Julian said “Anyone can betray anyone” that it was going to be the one quote that would haunt me through the entire book and boy was I right. I’ll be honest , though, when Julian made that statement, part of me assumed that he would be the one to betray everyone, but I should have known based on everyone’s reactions to this book that it couldn’t possibly be that simple and easy to guess. I was caught too off guard and that will without a doubt follow me until the next book is in my hands and maybe even after that.
Out of the entire book, I only really hated two characters, Evangeline and Elara (hmm…both start with E….). I really liked Maven (shhh) and I had my ups and downs with Cal. I like how for this book, the love triangle is somewhat not talked about (can I call it a love triangle?), maybe because it’s confusing or maybe because it simply isn’t important to the story, but I’m going to bring it up anyway. In the beginning, I really liked Cal and Mare together and then I liked Mare and Maven and now I’m just like “heck with it, I’ll just wait for next year!”
Overall, this book is definitely a favourite for 2015 (if not a favourite overall), it brought me out of a reading slump, although I’m afraid it might have thrown me into a deeper one. Amazing debut, Miss Aveyard, I hope we hear much more of you and your books in the future!
